ABOUT THE HIVE AVON
The Hive Avon is a local organisation working with local people throughout Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
We work with people with a learning disability and/or autism, their family and carers.
We provide support and information on a range of issues such as healthcare, education, housing, leisure and benefits.
We also run a variety of social and leisure clubs.
WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY?
A learning disability affects the way someone learns, communicates or does some everyday things. It is not an illness that can be cured. It is not mental illness. It is not dyslexia.
Some people with a mild learning disability do not need a lot of support. Other people may need support in a particular area, e.g. going shopping or getting dressed. Some people with a learning disability also have a physical disability. They can need support 24 hours a day.
A learning disability does not stop someone from learning and achieving if they get the right support.
