What is a learning disability?
A learning disability affects the way someone learns, communicates, or does everyday things.
It is not an illness that can be cured. It is not a mental illness. It is not dyslexia.
Some people with a mild learning disability do not need a lot of support. Other people may need support in a particular area, for example going shopping or getting dressed.
Some people with a learning disability also have a physical disability. They can need support 24 hours a day.
A learning disability does not stop someone from learning and achieving if they get they right support.
What is autism and ASD?
Both autism and ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) are part of a range of disorders that can cause communication and emotional difficulties.
Autism is a lifelong condition that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people and the world around them. Autism is not a learning disability, but people with autism often have a learning disability.
People with ASD can find it difficult to tell how other people are feeling by looking at the expression on their faces or listening to their tone of voice. They can find mixing with other people very hard.
